Abstract
This is one of the three european 'grand teints' or great dyes, as french called them in the 18th century, to stablish a set of plants that provide stable, durable, solid colors. It's not a catch-eye plant, as unless it finds a climbing aid it will be mostly crawling.

Description
Classic teatrises and therefore any dyer will tell you need three years to harvest the roots of this plant. They will spread all over the soil, so you'd rather plant them in big containers. They will threve very easyli even with cuttings in late summer or autumn.

Rubia, from latin for red or reddish, is the present day name in spanish. Also it is known as granza.
