The origin of safflower is Middle East, and nowadays is a very famous plant in India and from the Mediterrenan basin to Japan. Now it's mainly grown to obtain oil but at domestic gardens is been a common plant to colour food as a cheap substitute of saffron.

Description
The origin of these seeds is in Palleiros, Marcelle, in the province of Lugo, Spain, it is a traditional crop. The name 'azafrán' refers to the expensive crop, but this is the cheap alternative, also a food colorant but without the smell and taste of real 'Crocus sativus'.
It need warm temperatures to germinate, far from freezes, and if sown in May it can flower in July. Wait the flowers to decay and then you can harvest them, letting the seeds to form.
These seeds have been donated and grown in Madrid in 2022 by CIEA El Retiro from seeds lended from this Library.
